9 Islands - The Oxford Road Project

Oxford Road is one of the busiest roads leading from and into the centre of Manchester with an average vehicle flow of 30.000 cars and busses daily. There is a constant coming and going, a restless stream taking over, and one could easily think this road never has time to breathe and just stand out for itself.

My work is a photographic attempt to capture an Oxford Road "non-hour", a time where it is quiet and empty. I have been documenting the road for 3 weeks, on different days and different time slots. The "non-hour" doesn’t exist. There are only fractions of time that allow us to see Oxford Road deserted. Ironically, it seems like Oxford Road is holding its breath - waiting for the next vehicle to roll along, bringing it back to life.

9 Islands was exhibited in Manchester in July 2006. The limited edition artist book can be purchased through this website.
